Directions to Lakes and Hard to Find locations on the River

 All Directions are from the City of Grayling

AuSable River Hard to Find Access Points

The Castle  (South Branch AuSable River) M-72 East to Mason Tract and turn right (south)  . Go 3.9 miles down the road and turn left (east) on to the two track.  Keep to the left and you will come to a Y in the road, go right at the Y and the gate for it will be straight ahead.  Walk past the gate about an 1/8 of a mile and the foundation of the old castle is along the river.  

(T25N - R2W Section 14)

The Chapel  (South Branch AuSable River) M-72 east to M-18 and turn right (south). Turn right  (east) on River Lake road and it is 5.3 miles down the road. Make sure and keep to the right all the way back or you will not end up at the Chapel.  

(T25N - R1W Section 06)

White Pine State Forest Campground    M-72 East to Wakeley Bridge road and turn left (north) . Go to Polly trail and turn right (east). Make sure you stay on Polly trail and take it back a ways until you come to a gate. That is the entrance.

 (T26N - R1W Section 07)  

Canoe Campground    North Down River Road  East 4.2 miles to Headquarters Rd (south), turn right go 1.2 miles (follow the signs) turn right (east) and drive into campground. This campground is divided into two separate  campgrounds. Part is only accessible by river for canoe traffic and cars must be parked in the parking lot and persons must walk in to the campground.

Barker Lake   Take M-72 East to Barker Lake Road and turn right (south).  Go down Barker Lake Road 1.9 miles and turn right onto the two track.  Follow it and the lake will be on the left.

Barnes Lake  Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east on County Rd 612 until you get to Kinney Road (just past Jones Lake) and turn left (north). Go down Kinney  Rd until you come to the end of the road and you will see a gate. The lake is inside of the gate; you cannot access the lake. It is located within the Range 40 Complex.

Bull Frog Lake  Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east on County Rd 612 until you get to Kinney Road (just past Jones Lake) and turn left (north). Go down Kinney  Rd until you come to the end of the road and you will see a gate. The lake is inside of the gate; you cannot access the lake. It is located within the Range 40 Complex.

(T28N - R3W Section 12)  

Big Creek Impoundment  Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east) . Take it all the way to Walsh road (4 miles past Lovells and 3 miles before the Oscoda Co line) , turn right (south) on Walsh Road.  The Impoundment is down the road roughly five miles on the left. There are numerous entrances to the Impoundment on the left, which will take you down to the water. The impoundment is in both Crawford and Oscoda Counties.

Blue Gill Lake   Old 27 North to Roberts Rd (just north of Crawford - Otsego Co Line) and turn right (to the south east) . It will be the second lake on the right (west).

(T28N - R3W Section 06)

Bradford Lake  Old 27 North to Bradford Lake Rd and turn left (west)  and go straight down trail to the  lake.

(T28N - R3W Section 06)

Bright Lake  Old 27 North to M-93 (Hartwick Pines Rd)  and turn right (east) . Go east until you see the entrance for sign for Bright and Glory Lakes (one mile east of  I-75 on the north side of road).**

(T27N - R3W Section 16)

Camel Lake  Old 27 North to May Lake Rd (1/2 mile south of the village of Frederic) and turn left (west) . The lake will be on the right hand side of the road.

(T28N - R4W Section 35)

Clear Lake Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east on County Rd 612 until you get to Kinney Road (just past Jones Lake) and turn left (north). Go north on Kinney  Rd, It will be the second lake on the left (1.8 miles north of County Rd 612). 

(T28N - R2W Section 20)

Connors Marsh  M-72 East to M-18 (McMaster's Bridge Road) and turn left (north). Go north on McMaster's Bridge Rd for approx 7 miles until you see Connors Marsh Rd turn left (west).  Stay to the left and follow the trail back to the Marsh.

(T27N - R1W Section 34)

Cranberry Lake  Old 27 North to Hulbert Rd turn left (west) and then turn right (north) on the first two track on the right (past the bridge), go down until the road angles to the left, park and you have to walk down to the lake, which is on the left. 

(T28N - R4W Section 26)

Duck Lake  Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east) . Go east to Stephan Bridge Road (approx ten miles) and turn right (south).  Go south on Stephan Bridge Rd , turn right (south), drive south on Stephan Bridge Rd 2-1/2 miles to E. Lewiston Grade Rd, turn left (east) continue east approx 1 mile to the third 2 track on the left , turn left (north) and you will see the lake.  

(T27N - R2W Section 09)

Frog Lake Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east) . Go east to Stephan Bridge Road  (approx ten miles) and turn right (south).  Go south on Stephan Bridge Rd 1.6 miles and turn right (west) on the two track and keep to the left and it will take you back to the lake.

(T27N - R2W Section 05)

Glory Lake   Old 27 North to M-93 (Hartwick Pines Rd)  and turn right (east) . Go east until you see the entrance for sign for Bright and Glory Lakes (one mile east of  I-75 on the north side of road). **

(T27N - R3W Section 16)

Guthrie Lake   Old 27 North to County Road 612. Turn right (east) , go east to Sherman Road (approx four and one half miles),  turn left (north) on Sherman Road , go north approx six mile) to Marlette Road and turn right (east) . Go east on Marlette Road and follow the signs for Guthrie Lake (2-1/2 miles). This lake is divided between Crawford and Otsego Counties.

(T28N - R3W Section 01)  

Hardgrove Lake   I-75 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east to N. Bear Lake Road  (approx 4-1/2 miles) , turn left (north) , stay to the right and the lake will be on your right 1/8th of a mile north of County Rd 612.

(T28N - R3W Section 25)

Hartwick Lake    Old 27 North to M-93 (Hartwick Pines Rd)  and turn right (east) .  The lake is on the right, past Bright and Glory (approx one mile east of Bright & Glory Lakes). Walk in access only.

(T27N - R3W Section 15)

Higgins Lake   I-75 south to U.S. 27 south. Exit at North Higgins Lake Dr and follow signs to North Higgins Lake State Park. (just the north sliver is in Crawford County) 99% of the lake is in Roscommon County.

(T25N - R4W Sections 35 & 36)

Hiscock Lake   M –72 East to M-18 and turn right (south).  Go to Dry Lake Road  (approx 5-1/2 miles south of M-72) and turn left (east)  and it is the second lake on the left (north - 8/10'ths east of  M-18) .  Only access to lake is through private property.

(T25N - R1W Section 27)

Horseshoe Lake  Old 27 North to Roberts Rd (just north of Crawford - Otsego Co Line) and turn right (to the south east) . It will be the first lake on the right (west side of Roberts Rd)

(T28N - R3W Section 06)

Howes Lake   M-72 West to Howes Lake Road  (approx six miles west of Grayling) and turn right (north). Go north and the lake will be on the right (east) next to Camp Shawano.

(T27N - R4W Section 32)

Hunters Lake   M-72 East to M-18 and turn right (south) ,   Go to F-97 (County Rd 502 - road to Kirtland Community College) and turn left (south) , go one mile to Hunters Lake Rd , turn left (east) the lake is on the left (north) side approx 1/3rd of a mile from F-97 (County Rd 502).

(T25N - R1W Section 23)

Jones Lake   Old 27 North to County road 612 and turn right (east) . Go east 8-1/2 miles to Jones Lake Rd (on the right - south side), turn right (south) and follow the signs. ** 

(T28N - R2W Section 31)

Kellogg Lake   M –72 East to M-18 and turn right (south).  Go to Dry Lake Road  (approx 5-1/2 miles south of M-72) and turn left (east)  and it is the first lake on the left (north - 5/10'ths east of  M-18) .  100% Huron National Forest.

(T25N - R1W Section 27)

Kneff Lake  M-72 East to Stephan Bridge Road and turn right (south). Go south 1 mile watch for signs for Kneff Lake National Forest Campground and Picnic Area. It will be on your left (east) side of road. Kneff Lake is open only during the summer and is administered by the US National Forest Office in Mio.

(T26N - R2W Section 20)

Kyle Lake   No Access (inside closed area of Range 30 complex) North Down River Rd East from Grayling to Stephan Bridge Rd. , turn left (north) , it is located 3 miles north of North Down River Rd on the west side of the road (inside fence line).

(T27N - R2W Section 17)

Big K.P. Lake  Old 27 North to County road 612 and turn right (east) . Go east 9-1/2 miles K.P. Lake Rd. Turn right (south) and just follow the signs. (1/2 mile on the left for public access)

(T28N - R2W Section 28)

Little K.P. Lake  Same as above but before the road that takes you to the public access , there is a two track on the right (south). Go down the two track and park. You will have to walk down to it.  

(T28N - R2W Section 33)

Lake Margrethe  Off West from Grayling on M-72 - one public launch - at the end of Euclid Ave by the State Forest Campground. (Entry from M-72 - McIntyre's Landing Rd).

(T26N - R4W Sections 08, 09, 10, 17, 16, 15, 21, 22)

Lonesome Lake   Old 27 North to County road 612 and turn right (east) . Go east 11-1/2 miles to Lonesome Lake Rd (on the left side) (north side), There also is a sign with a "7" on it. Turn left (north) approx 4 miles, Lonesome Lake is on the west (left) side of road. Lonesome Lake may be closed at times due to military training requirements.  

(T28N -R2W Section 03)

Lost Lake  M-72 West to Manistee River Road and turn right (north). Go north until the next stop sign (County Rd 612) approx 8 miles north of M-72. Turn left on County Rd 612 go west past the river and turn right (north) on the first road on the right (north side) ( there will be a Kalkaska County road 612 sign just after it).  Follow the road a couple of miles until you come to a trail on the right that has an entrance for both North and South bound traffic and turn right. Stay on the main trail until you come to the lake. Do not drive on the pipeline.

(T28N - R4W Section 06)

Marsh Lake   Old 27 North to County Road 612. Turn right (east) , go east to Sherman Road (approx four and one half miles),  turn left (north) on Sherman Road , go north approx six mile) to Marlette Road and turn right (east) . Go east on Marlette Road and follow the signs for Guthrie Lake, Marsh Lake and Section One Lake (2-1/2 miles). Marsh Lake is south of Guthrie Lake and east of Section One Lake.

(T28N - R3W Section 01)

May Lake   Old 27 North to May Lake road, turn left (west)  and go to Cindy Lane and turn right (north) . There is no public access to May Lake.

(T28N - R4W Section 35)

Mud Lake   Not accessible by road. Can be seen at the top of Pere Cheney Hills.  

(T25N - R3W Section 26)

Pickerel Lake   Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east) . Take it all the way to Walsh road (4 miles past Lovells and 3 miles before the Oscoda Co line) , turn right (south) on Walsh Road.  Go down past Big Creek Impoundment and turn left on Pickerel Lake road.  Go down to where you will see another road merge into the one you are on and turn left onto it.  Turn left onto the third two track on your left, stay to the right and follow the trail and the lake will be on your left. Pickerel Lake is in both Crawford and Oscoda counties.

(T28N - R1W Section 24)

River Lake  Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east on County Rd 612 until you get to Kinney Road (just across from Jones Lake) and turn left (north). Go north on Kinney  Rd, It will be the first lake on the left (approx 0.6 miles north of County Rd 612). 

(T28N - R2W Section 30).

Sand Hill Lake  Old 27 North 2.4 miles past M-93 (Hartwick Pines Rd) and turn left onto the two track going over the railroad tracks (It will be the second two track).  Turn down it and stay to the left and the lake will be on your left and the mainstream will be on the right.  

(T27N - R4W Section 23)

Section One Lake  Old 27 North to County Road 612. Turn right (east) , go east to Sherman Road (approx four and one half miles),  turn left (north) on Sherman Road , go north approx six mile) to Marlette Road and turn right (east) . Go east on Marlette Road and follow the signs for Guthrie Lake, Marsh Lake and Section One Lake (2-1/2 miles). Section One Lake is west of Guthrie Lake and Marsh Lake.

(T28N - R3W Section 01)

Shellenbarger Lake   Off of M-72 east just 1 mile east of Grayling. Privately owned by Camp AuSable Seventh Day Adventist Church.

(T26N - R3W Section 16)

Shupac Lake   Old 27 North to County Rd 612 and turn right (east) . Go east on County Rd 612 approx 15 miles to Twin Bridge Rd , turn left (north) and go 2 miles (watch for signs) for Shupac Lake launch site and campground (on the right - east side of road). Turn right and follow the gravel road (ends at launch site)**

(T28N - R1W Section 18)

Little Shupac Lake   Old 27 North to County Rd 612 and turn right (east) . Go east on County Rd 612 approx 17 miles to Shupac Lake Rd , turn left (north) and go 6/10th's of a mile . Little Shupac Lake is on the right (east) side of the road (surrounded by state land).

(T28N - R1W Section 17)

Simpson Lakes  Private located within the Grayling Game Club south of the City of Grayling.

(T26N - R3W Section 19)

Staley Lake   M-72 east to Staley Lake Road (3 miles east of I-75) and turn right (south).  Go 1.8 miles south on Staley Lake Rd and turn left (east) onto the two track, keep to the left, take the faint trail on the right up the hill, and follow it to the lake.

(T26N - R3W Section 24)

Timber Lake   Old 27 North to County Road 612 and turn right (east). Go east on County Rd 612 until you get to Kinney Road (just past Jones Lake) and turn left (north). Go north on Kinney  Rd, It is 2-1/2 miles north of County Rd 612 (it is within the Range 40 impact area and not accessible to the public due to DNR Closure order.  

(T28N - R2W Section 18)

Wakeley Lake  M-72 east (approx 10 miles east of Grayling) the entrance is located on mile east of Wakeley Bridge / Chase Bridge Rd. The entrance is on the north side of road, just follow the signs. Wakeley Lake has restricted times for access and is under the jurisdiction of the US Forest Service Office in Mio.

(T26N - R2W Section 23)

West Lake   M-72 East to M-18 and turn right (south) ,  Go to F-97 (County Rd 502 - road to Kirtland Community College) and turn left (south) , go 1-1/2 miles to Dry Lake Rd, turn left (east) the lake is at the end of the road approx 1-1/3rd of a mile from F-97 (County Rd 502). 

(T25N - R1W Section 25)
